Hi readers! While I’m a native Southern Californian, I am currently a U.K. resident and Ph.D. student based in Brighton.
Growing up in a Mexican-American household, I don’t think my parents really expected me to 1) Become a solo traveler, and 2) Pursue an education beyond a Bachelor’s. I grew up with hard-working parents -my mom was born in Fullerton, California, and my dad was born in rural Mexico – neither received a college education.
I was never really encouraged to travel, in fact, my parents seemed terrified whenever I brought up the prospect of my traveling anywhere outside of California. I had to create my own opportunities and have the self-discipline to GET *snap* SHIT *snap* DONE *snap*.
So after graduating from the University of Southern California in 2009, i decided to join the United States Peace Corps. I served in rural South Africa for two years (2010-2012), where I mastered bucket bathing and cockroach killing. I met some pretty fantastic people along the way (Sanibonani Mzansi!).
When I completed my Peace Corps service, I moved to the U.K. to pursue my Master’s in Human Rights at the University of Sussex. Afterwards, I moved back home to Southern California and worked in HR for 2 years. While I worked with fantastic people, it was not exactly the work I envisioned doing – sound familiar? So I applied to a Ph.D. program and got in! So here I am, living in Brighton, researching and continuing to get shit done.
When I’m not buried in research I like to take advantage of my location and travel around Europe. FYI, once you live in the continent, you can find some pretty cheap flights.
In this blog, I write about my travels (Odyssey), and of course, I also write about places where I’ve had great meals/drinkies (Nosh).
Nisale Kahle! (Go Well!)
